Body Mass Composition Testing Q & A
What is body mass composition testing?
Body mass composition testing offers a more comprehensive assessment of your weight-loss success than traditional methods, such as weighing yourself regularly or using the body mass index (BMI) calculation based on height and weight.
Using the Seca BCA, a state-of-the-art technology offered by Internal & Bariatric Medicine, Dr. Saradih measures weight, body fat, body water, muscle mass, and bone density. BCA allows him to create a personalized plan of care to support your ongoing weight-loss efforts.
How is body mass composition different than BMI?
Traditionally, practitioners use BMI to determine if you’re within a healthy weight range and to establish an appropriate treatment plan.
Your BMI reflects an estimated amount of body fat you may have based only on your weight and height. According to this measure, a BMI of over 29 indicates you’re overweight, and over 30 indicates obesity.
Your BMI, however, doesn’t reflect where your fat is stored or your ratio of fat to muscle. Because of this, BMI is not an entirely accurate measurement for tracking weight-loss progress.
Body mass composition testing, in contrast, is a more detailed, comprehensive approach to evaluating your weight and body mass because as it takes into account much more than just your weight and height.
What are the benefits of body mass composition testing?
Body mass composition testing allows Dr. Saradih to collect valuable information about your weight and how it impacts your overall health and wellness. This information enables him to create an entirely customized plan of care for you.
The BCA offers personalized information such as:
- Baseline fat percentage
- Baseline muscle percentage
- State of hydration
- Excess fat loss
- Muscle mass loss
- Bone health
Other benefits include the ability to:
- Distinguish between muscle and fat mass
- Track weight-loss progress
- Monitor your dietary needs
- Monitor for excessive fat loss
- Monitor your muscle mass loss
The ultimate goal of your customized treatment plan is to lose as much fat as possible while retaining and increasing your muscle mass. BCA is a valuable part of supporting healthy weight loss, especially after you’ve had bariatric surgery and are losing significant amounts of weight.
